STORYTELLER GUIDELINES
Every Generation Women story is different, but the ones that shine on stage tend to share a few things in common:
Aim for hope and heart.
We love stories that leave the audience feeling uplifted or smiling. Serious moments are welcome, but the overall tone should be warm, optimistic, funny or heartfelt in some way.Show, don’t just tell.
Take us into a moment. We want to see, feel, and experience the story with you. Use vivid details and emotion—the personal is always universal.Keep it focused.
Think of your story as one snapshot, not your whole life. A single turning point or theme will land more powerfully than a memoir in five minutes.Choose the right version of your story.
Some stories hold deep pain or trauma—and while those experiences matter, Generation Women isn’t the right space for raw or unprocessed material. Ask yourself: What’s the version of this story I’m ready to tell on stage? We’re looking for reflection and meaning, not catharsis.
Think you’ve got a story that fits? Submit your pitch!

Here are answers to some of the most common questions about telling a story at our show:
-
Generation Women stories are meant to be hopeful, uplifting, and entertaining. We love stories that highlight resilience, joy, humor, or heartwarming moments. Serious topics are welcome, but the overall story should celebrate the best of humanity, not dwell in trauma.
-
Not at all! Some of the best stories come from small, everyday moments—a conversation, a mishap, an unexpected encounter—that reveal something bigger. Focus on one clear event or memory rather than trying to cover your whole life.
-
Yes, but with balance. Stories can touch on challenges, setbacks, or hard truths, but they should not live there. Think of struggle as the backdrop, not the star. We want the audience to walk away feeling energized, inspired, and connected.
-
You don’t need to be a comedian, but humor is always welcome! Even a little levity goes a long way.
-
Stories are usually 5-7 minutes when performed aloud (roughly 1000-1,200 words max).
-
Nope! you can have your notes on stage. That said, the best performances come when storytellers know their piece well enough to look up, connect with the audience, and enjoy the telling.
-
No problem. Many of our storytellers are first-timers! We’ll guide you through the process and give you tips on how to shape and deliver your story. Our audience is famously warm and supportive - you’ll feel right at home.
-
Yes. We’ll review your draft and offer suggestions to help sharpen your story and ensure it fits the tone of our show. Our goal is to help you shine on stage.
